About Characters of Kings Cross

The essential work done by The Wayside Chapel never stops, but the funding to keep their doors open sometimes does.

That’s why this year, in line with Vivid Sydney, Coca-Cola is proudly supporting The Wayside Chapel by shining a light on the characters of this vibrant cross section of society starting with its iconic Kings Cross billboard, to help raise awareness and funds to support their great work.

The campaign, ‘Characters of Kings Cross’, features moving portraits of The Wayside Chapel visitors, supporters and volunteers, Kings Cross artists, performers, local retailers and restaurateurs shot by portrait photographer Katherine Williams.

By sharing these captivating images and raw stories of those who make-up this rich and diverse community, Coca-Cola aims to help The Wayside Chapel in its efforts to diminish judgement and create a community where there is no ‘us and them’.

To further support The Wayside Chapel, Coca-Cola will also match every dollar donated through The Characters of Kings Cross donation drive, up to $10,000! This alone will provide:

· A hot shower with toiletries and a change of clothes for 1800 people sleeping on the streets.
· Participation for 200 people in an employment clinic covering job readiness, computer literacy and job selection
· Participation for up to 400 people in a breakfast and nutrition program to teach cooking skills and raise awareness about healthy choices

In case you need more convincing to support this incredible organisation, in an average week The Wayside Chapel provides 517 community meals, 319 changes of clothing, 741 instances of health-related support including mental health. There are 252 instances of support for youth at risk and 176 members of the community visit Wayside to learn more about their work.

In fact 195,000 instances of support were provided last financial year to people seeking assistance or just stopping by for a chat and a place where they can find company and acceptance.

About The Wayside Chapel

The Wayside Chapel has provided unconditional love, care and support for people on and around the streets of Kings Cross since 1964.

Today, under the banner of love over hate, The Wayside Chapel creates a community where there is no ‘us and them’ by breaking down the barriers of judgement and providing a safe place where people from all walks of life are welcome just to ‘be’.

The Wayside Chapel draws people out of social isolation and invites them into the healing place of community. People marginalised by homelessness, mental health issues and substance abuse can turn to Wayside for compassion, tolerance and support.

Our community services centres in both Kings Cross and Bondi, youth space and outreach service, mental health program, twilight team, community cafe and our Aboriginal project are all designed to ensure the most disadvantaged members of our community have access to essential health, welfare, social and recreational services.

Each year, thousands of people visit Wayside for assistance in gaining equitable access to essential health, welfare and related services.

In the last year alone, Wayside provided, amongst other services, 7,680 community meals, 6,776 changes of clothing, 14,100 hours of support to people with a long-term mental health issue, and 1,991 social and recreational activities for the whole community to participate in. People purchased over 86,100 low cost items in our café, there were 6,699 instances of support for youth at risk and 8,703 members of the community visited Wayside to learn more about our work.

Overall, 79,300 instances of support were provided to people seeking assistance or just stopping by for a chat and a place where they can find company and acceptance.
