In July 2016, Sarah was a healthy and active 9yr old girl participating in numerous sports. Progressively she had complained of an increasingly sore right shin and ankle. After visiting a physiotherapist for multiple x-ray’s, Sarah was the admitted to Sydney Children’s Hospital Randwick where it was formally identified she had ‘Osteosarcoma’ – an aggressive form of bone tumor in her right tibia.
A permanent line was surgically installed and a 3 stage process followed including approx 3 months of initial chemotherapy, major 10 hour surgical procedure to remove the section of bone effected by the tumor, external radiation, reinsertion, bone graft and installation of a plate. This was the subsequently followed by plastic surgery and another 4 months of chemotherapy.
It was here Sarah met Captain Starlight who helped her, and her family through the many operations and treatments. Starlight kept Sarah laughing through the pain and boredom of hospitalisation, ensuring that she continued to wear that indelible smile despite facing the harshest adversity.
On her 10th birthday, Sarah proudly rang the oncology ward ‘victory bell’ confirming she had beaten the cancer. And whilst there will be initial ongoing rehabilitation, the outlook now is positive.
There are many beautiful children and families who also are dealing with such affliction and we would love to help brighten their lives in hospital by donating to Starlight Children’s Foundation.
Any support that you can give will be appreciated greatly by Starlight Children’s Foundation, our Fitness First community, Sarah and her family.
