About Kumo's for a cure

Hola mi amigo! 🙋🏼 If you don't know us, I'm Jess and that's my mum, Marion (the good sort in pink) - AKA the Kumo's 👯 Together, we're raising funds for Parkinson's Disease by trekking across Spain 🇪🇸 in September. Mum is 53, fit AF and has early onset Parkinson's. I'm almost 30, probably drink too much, and ironically most likely to be the one dragging my feet on this hike - Mum leg presses 100kg and I get tired walking down the stairs. In 2015, mum noticed a nervous twitch in her left arm. So she cut out coffee - but it didn’t help. It took another two years (and a caffeine detox) before she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. The good news is she can now drink as much coffee as she wants. The bad news is, yeah, Parkinson's. So she found one of the best neurologists in Australia, and started a rigorous diet, exercise and medicinal regime. I think that when people are told bad news, they try to find a way to regain their power and control over the situation. And this is exactly what mum and dad did. They joined a gym and found the sweetest, loveliest Personal Trainer to train them both. Mohammad is deeply invested in giving them the right training to make mum stronger 🏋🏼‍♀️ and fitter so that the Parkinson’s will be easier to manage as she gets older (and the disease gets worse). She goes to Yoga 🧘‍♀️ three times a week to strengthen her core, work on her balance and keep flexible. And she reluctantly goes swimming 🏊🏼‍♀️ with dad (and out laps him) so that she’s coordinated in and out of the pool. And now she’s walking across Spain. And I’m tagging along for a mama-daughter trip! Olé! 💃🏼 Camino for a Cure 2018 is a 10-day trek around Spain that helps raise funds for Shake It Up Australia. Every dollar raised will be matched by The Michael J. Fox Foundation to help fund research for Parkinson’s Disease in Australia. We’re aiming to raise $10,000 – all of which will be donated to a very worthwhile cause. Because although she’s doing everything right to slow the progression of her disease, there isn’t a cure. But maybe one day soon there will be. ✨ Adios! Jess Kumanovski P.S. I can't work out how to thank anyone who has donated, so get ready for me to slide into your DM's to express our gratitude! 💖😘 Follow our adventure on instagram! 🤳🏼 @jesskumanovski #CaminoForACure #IveBeenInspired

Shake It Up Australia for Parkinson’s Research

Shake It Up Australia Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2011 and in partnership with The Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) promotes and funds Parkinson’s disease research in Australia aimed at better treatments and ultimately a cure.

To date, the foundation together with our partners at The Michael J. Fox Foundation have co-funded over $6 Million into Australian Parkinson's research and are the largest non-government funders across multiple research institutes.

The foundation was established by Clyde Campbell, a father of three and business owner who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009 at the age of 44. Clyde set out to find out as much as he could about the disease and determine what he could do in a practical sense to assist. His search led him to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in the United States and the remarkable work they do to fund medical research targeted at finding better treatments on the path to a cure for Parkinson’s disease.
The partnership builds upon a strong base of promising Parkinson’s research in Australia and allows both organisations to maximise the impact of capital raised from the Australian Parkinson’s community to accelerate better treatments on the path to a cure. Under the partnership, all funds raised by Shake It Up  Australia Foundation and our supporters are directed toward research efforts in Australia.  We also guarantee that 100% of your donation is directed into research, this is made possible by our founding directors covering all overhead and administration costs of the foundation.

As the country’s leader in strategic Parkinson’s research funding we are excited about the talent we have in our Australian institutes and the prospect that their work will take us closer to a cure.
