My Story

2017 was a big year for me. My beautiful baby girl was born in February making us a family of five. Life was busy but we were so happy and complete. It was during this time that I began to follow Love your Sister, I became emotionally involved with Connie’s story. Maybe it was because she was a regular Mum with kids, but her story of her fight with cancer pulled at my heart. When she died I couldn’t help but cry, she had a young family and my heart hurt for her children, and for Connie who could no longer be part of their lives. It was during her memorial service when Sam was speaking, and he said for all mums to check their breasts, that I realized I hadn’t done so since before Nell was born. I remember the feeling in my heart whilst checking my breast when I did find a large lump. I had been lumpy between pregnancies (like many women), but this lump felt solid. It was a shocking surprise. Within a week of my GP appointment, I was having a mammogram , a biopsy and then a meeting with a specialist surgeon at the hospital.. I had DCIS, Ductal carcinoma In situ- early stage breast cancer that was contained in my milk ducts. A double mastectomy and reconstruction was also booked for that horrid week. I’m a lucky one. My surgeon was amazing, and further tests revealed that I didn’t need further treatment. I’ve had my ups and downs mentally since then, and my breast will never feel like my own, however, there are many positives about my story and I am thankful, so darn thankful! Without Connie’s story, who knows how my story would have ended. So here I am, taking part in Real Insurance Sydney Harbour 10k to raise much needed funds for Love Your Sister. I will be running for Connie, for her boys and for ME.. because I can!!!! Connie taught me that “now is awesome”, and I’m making sure that I remind myself of this even when times are tough and to make the most of every day with my loved ones. You can help too, by donating to my page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! Or buy yourself some rainbow socks and run too!! You can also support me by encouraging others to get involved, too. Please email the link to my page to your friends and family, or share it on social media. Thank you for your generosity and support -- it means a lot to me. Love to you all xo

About my cause: Love Your Sister

Love Your Sister is Australia’s most authentic and fastest-growing cancer charity.

Victorian Australian of the Year 2018 and Love Your Sister co-founder Samuel Johnson, has one simple message for anyone interested in solving the cancer conundrum...

“Love Your Sister passes on 100% of all individual donations IN FULL to the country’s best researchers. No skimming, no admin, no bull.”  - Samuel Johnson

It all started with the most absurd dare imaginable. Connie Johnson, young mum of two, was told that she was terminal with breast cancer and to arrange her affairs. Instead, she sent her brother, actor Samuel Johnson (best known as the guy who played ‘Molly’), to ride around the entire country on a unicycle, to personally remind every young mum in the land to check their boobs. Love Your Sister was born.

Samuel kept his promise. After 364 days atop his one-wheeler, over 1000 media calls, 450 community fundraisers and 50 school visits, Samuel finally returned to Federation Square on his unicycle and into Connie’s waiting arms. And the scientists at the Garvan Research Foundation found themselves $1.4M richer.

While Samuel’s insane unicycling adventure is done, Love Your Sister is not. Not while there’s still no cure. Not after Samuel promised the 360,000-strong Love Your Sister Village that he would up the fundraising goal to TEN million dollars. Currently, their total stands just over $7M. There is now a new Breast Cancer Lab at Garvan, headed by the Connie Johnson Fellow, Professor Elgene Lim, and a new national metastatic tissue bank, for all cancers, is rolling out this year.

After his Gold Logie-winning turn as Molly Meldrum for Network Seven, Samuel promptly retired from acting to focus entirely on Love Your Sister’s goal of raising ten million dollars for cancer research. In Samuel’s words, ‘Cancer is the last true riddle of our time (not of our doing) and I wanna be a part of the push to solve it once and for all. I won’t play pretend on telly while science is being muzzled’.
