Why I am supporting Lung Foundation Australia

My Story

During 2016, Helen and I attended an Education Seminar on lung diseases, and during it, we were asked if anyone could “organize a walk”, and already being in a walking group, I volunteered. Feeling motivated, I organized a Shine a Light on Lung Cancer Walk. My wife has Lung Cancer, a friend of ours had lung cancer, and two other friends of our lost a loved one to Lung Cancer. I have been inspired by the work of The Lung Foundation Australia and it is a fervent wish of mine to support them in any way I can. As mentioned, I decided to raise money by organizing Shine a Light on Lung Cancer walks. Well, it's now late in 2018, and my support of the Lung Foundation still remains the same. Why do I support them? Well, one reason of course is that my wife has lung cancer, another is we have both lost friends because of lung cancer, a third is we have friends who have lung cancer ..... lung cancer kills more than one person every hour of every day. Surely that is a good enough reason to help to raise funds for research into Lung Cancer and other Lung Diseases? Thanks, Rick Irving

About Shine a Light on lung cancer

Anyone can get lung cancer. One Australian dies every hour from lung cancer, making it the leading cause of cancer death in Australia; more than breast, prostate and ovarian cancers combined.
Recent research has revealed one third of Australians believe people with lung cancer have only themselves to blame, while one in ten will say they got what they deserved.
This stigma surrounding lung cancer has a devastating impact on the level of funding, research and support available to people living with lung cancer. Lung Foundation Australia is working to break down the stigma and increase awareness and support for those with this neglected disease.
You can help make a difference.
Help Shine a Light on Lung Cancer in support of lung cancer research. These local community events bring together patients, their family and friends, health professionals, clinicians, and researchers as one resilient voice in support of more research funding and earlier diagnosis of lung cancer.
All funds raised through Shine a Light on Lung Cancer events will be invested into lung cancer research.
Get involved and help Lung Foundation Australia to continue to support and empower lung cancer patients, their families and carers.

You can make a donation online or set up your own fundraising page - it is simple. If you need assistance or would like to ask any questions please contact Amy Rymer on (07) 3251 3651 or amyr@lungfoundation.com

About my cause: Lung Foundation Australia

Anyone can get lung disease. It affects 1 in 4 Australians and is the second leading cause of death.

Lung Foundation Australia is the only charity in Australia providing support and a voice for people with lung disease, their families, carers, health professionals and the general community.

We fund life-changing research and facilitate early detection by supporting best practice clinical management and delivering lung health programs. We work to empower those with lung disease to take the important steps they can to enjoy a better quality of life by understanding and managing their disease.

Lung Foundation Australia works across all areas of lung disease, with a particular focus on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), lung cancer and rare lung diseases including Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH), bronchiectasis and rare lung disease in children.

We offer a range of support and services to help people to manage their lung condition and improve their lung health and wellbeing. Your generous donations ensure we can continue to:

- Drive community awareness about lung health

- Fund word class research

- Advocate for people with a lung condition

- Provide information and support for patients

- Facilitate best-practice training and education for health professionals.

Lung Foundation Australia relies on funding from individuals, families, businesses and industry organisations and are deeply appreciated of this generosity. To increase our support for research, patients and advocacy, it is critical we continue to build our capacity to raise further funds in the community.

Fundraise by creating your own fundraising challenge. Fundraising can be a lot of fun and a great way to get the community together for a purpose.

Thank you for your kind support.
