Why I am supporting Lung Foundation Australia

My Story

I was a reasonably fit and healthy mother of two daughters and a wife when I was diagnosed with Advance Lung Cancer (rare type called ALK Positive) on November 2016. Since 2011, I have been operating my own accounting practice and my passion for numbers and entrepreneurial spirit has led me to establish more successful businesses. Health and fitness has always been important to me throughout my life, particularly between 2004 and 2008 when I was a business partner of two Fernwood Women’s Health Clubs in Queensland. Throughout 2015 and 2016, whilst I was busy establishing our businesses, I started to experience fatigue and occasional chest, neck and shoulder pain. To manage my fatigue and pain I started to have regular massages and a quarterly injection of Vitamin B and I believed that this would resolve my symptoms. In October 2016, despite my busy schedule, I booked for a Stress Echo Test to make certain that I do not have any heart issues as I was experiencing occasional chest pain. The heart specialist said my heart was good BUT I had fluid on my lungs and that I should see a specialist urgently! I had no clue that my LUNG (left) was responsible for these combined symptoms of fatique, chest, neck and shoulder pain. My life changed in just one breath when my Doctor diagnosed me with advanced lung cancer that was INOPERABLE, INCURABLE and TERMINAL. I will always remember the pain and tears from my husband’s face as well as my daughters and my close friends. This was not the first time that my life was impacted by CANCER. In 2003 my husband was diagnosed with leukemia. Fortunately for us he was diagnosed at an early stage and he now lives a normal healthy and active lifestyle thanks to the first generation targeted pill, Gleevec for which he was put on a trial and has since been approved as a cure. Unfortunately for me, and others in the same situation as me, our “magic pill” to cure our cancer is still to be invented. My current pill is keeping my cancer at bay for now. Due to drug resistance, this drug will inevitably fail and then I have to move on to another treatment. My life will be from treatment to treatment with the hope that lung cancer research will continue to provide me with new treatment options whilst waiting for a cure. My oncologist said my life will be short and so I will do everything I can to fight for our cure until my lungs give up. I would like to support Lung Foundation Australia in their mission to lobby the Australian government for more funding for the biggest cancer killer in Australia. I have created a Facebook page called LOVE OUR LUNGS for my advocacy work and it also allows me to update my family and friends who have been my greatest support in my new life of living with cancer. Lung cancer can happen to anyone with lungs. THIS IS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY, 12,000 diagnosed each year, 9,000 deaths each year, one person dies every hour. Please help by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about the discrimination in funding, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!

About Shine a Light on lung cancer

Anyone can get lung cancer. One Australian dies every hour from lung cancer, making it the leading cause of cancer death in Australia; more than breast, prostate and ovarian cancers combined.
Recent research has revealed one third of Australians believe people with lung cancer have only themselves to blame, while one in ten will say they got what they deserved.
This stigma surrounding lung cancer has a devastating impact on the level of funding, research and support available to people living with lung cancer. Lung Foundation Australia is working to break down the stigma and increase awareness and support for those with this neglected disease.
You can help make a difference.
Help Shine a Light on Lung Cancer in support of lung cancer research. These local community events bring together patients, their family and friends, health professionals, clinicians, and researchers as one resilient voice in support of more research funding and earlier diagnosis of lung cancer.
All funds raised through Shine a Light on Lung Cancer events will be invested into lung cancer research.
Get involved and help Lung Foundation Australia to continue to support and empower lung cancer patients, their families and carers.

You can make a donation online or set up your own fundraising page - it is simple. If you need assistance or would like to ask any questions please contact Amy Rymer on (07) 3251 3651 or

About my cause: Lung Foundation Australia

Anyone can get lung disease. It affects 1 in 4 Australians and is the second leading cause of death.

Lung Foundation Australia is the only charity in Australia providing support and a voice for people with lung disease, their families, carers, health professionals and the general community.

We fund life-changing research and facilitate early detection by supporting best practice clinical management and delivering lung health programs. We work to empower those with lung disease to take the important steps they can to enjoy a better quality of life by understanding and managing their disease.

Lung Foundation Australia works across all areas of lung disease, with a particular focus on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), lung cancer and rare lung diseases including Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH), bronchiectasis and rare lung disease in children.

We offer a range of support and services to help people to manage their lung condition and improve their lung health and wellbeing. Your generous donations ensure we can continue to:

- Drive community awareness about lung health

- Fund word class research

- Advocate for people with a lung condition

- Provide information and support for patients

- Facilitate best-practice training and education for health professionals.

Lung Foundation Australia relies on funding from individuals, families, businesses and industry organisations and are deeply appreciated of this generosity. To increase our support for research, patients and advocacy, it is critical we continue to build our capacity to raise further funds in the community.

Fundraise by creating your own fundraising challenge. Fundraising can be a lot of fun and a great way to get the community together for a purpose.

Thank you for your kind support.
