Why I am supporting Lung Foundation Australia

My Story

My name is Sandie Parter and I come from the Darumbal tribe of Rockhampton and live in Emerald, Central Queensland. I am fundraising to help Lung Foundation Australia set up a nation wide Respiratory Nurse Telephone Service to provide clinical information and support to people living with lung disease - no matter where they live. I have lived with lung disease for most of my life and my beloved Dad passed after respiratory failure due to chronic asthma in 2008. At the moment, I have my dear Mum in aged care and suffering from a lung disease as well. In 2007, I was hospitalised with pneumonia. It was at this time that I realised I had done serious damage to my lungs and had to quit smoking. I was very determined and thought, ‘I will give up smoking or die trying’. Using nicotine replacement therapy and working closely with my GP for support, by early 2009 I had successfully stopped smoking. However, I was told by my doctor that my lungs were so damaged that I had developed COPD. I try to cope the best that I can with my COPD but on many occasions I get chest infections which lead to exacerbations and I find myself in hospital. Believe it or not hospital records show I was admitted a shocking 52 times in one year! I believe that access to an experienced Respiratory Nurse on a 1800 number would help me manage my symptoms and side effects and reduce my visits to the hospital. This free service will make a real difference to people like me who live in a regional or remote setting. Please help by donating to my page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! You can also support me by encouraging others to get involved, too. Please email the link to my page to your friends and family, or share it on social media. "Because of her, we can". Thank you for your generosity and support -- it means a lot to me. Together we can help Lung Foundation Australia create the world we want to see.

About National Respiratory Nurse Support Service

Help Lung Foundation Australia establish a free National Respiratory Nurse Telephone Support Service
Too many people with a lung disease are feeling isolated, anxious and unsupported. Those living outside the main cities are particularly in need of extra support.
Lung Foundation Australia is asking for your help so that we can provide a new Respiratory Nurse Telephone Support Service via our free call number.
This new service will provide access to a highly qualified Respiratory Nurse for patients, relatives, carers and health professionals – just a phone call away. Callers can discuss any problems or queries they have on lung health related matters including personal care and management, and referral to local support services where necessary.
Brisbane patient, Meredith Lores, who was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in February 2015, knows firsthand the benefits of having access to and the support of an experienced nurse.   “With the support of my nurse, I now have the tools to manage my COPD and this has made a massive difference to my breathing and quality of life,” Meredith said.
This personal care is invaluable to people like Meredith, whose symptoms are changing the way she lives her life.
Please help Lung Foundation Australia establish this much needed telephone support service so people can access the support of an experienced and qualified Respiratory Nurse over the phone – no matter where they live and what lung condition they have.

You can make a donation online or set up your own fundraising page - it is simple.  If you need assistance or would like to ask any questions please contact Amy Rymer on (07) 3251 3651  or

About my cause: Lung Foundation Australia

Anyone can get lung disease. It affects 1 in 4 Australians and is the second leading cause of death.

Lung Foundation Australia is the only charity in Australia providing support and a voice for people with lung disease, their families, carers, health professionals and the general community.

We fund life-changing research and facilitate early detection by supporting best practice clinical management and delivering lung health programs. We work to empower those with lung disease to take the important steps they can to enjoy a better quality of life by understanding and managing their disease.

Lung Foundation Australia works across all areas of lung disease, with a particular focus on Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), lung cancer and rare lung diseases including Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH), bronchiectasis and rare lung disease in children.

We offer a range of support and services to help people to manage their lung condition and improve their lung health and wellbeing. Your generous donations ensure we can continue to:

- Drive community awareness about lung health

- Fund word class research

- Advocate for people with a lung condition

- Provide information and support for patients

- Facilitate best-practice training and education for health professionals.

Lung Foundation Australia relies on funding from individuals, families, businesses and industry organisations and are deeply appreciated of this generosity. To increase our support for research, patients and advocacy, it is critical we continue to build our capacity to raise further funds in the community.

Fundraise by creating your own fundraising challenge. Fundraising can be a lot of fun and a great way to get the community together for a purpose.

Thank you for your kind support.
