Hummingbird House is Queensland’s only children’s hospice, supporting children with life-limiting conditions and their families. We provide short break stays, family support services, creative therapies, and care at the end of life. Hummingbird House also cares for children after they have died. This care can include: memory-making, specialist bereavement care, and funeral and memorial support. We offer this support to families of children with life-limiting conditions who have died at home, in hospital, or at Hummingbird House.
Our services are free for families. Our goal is to provide a caring embrace that allows families to have space and time together, as they say goodbye to their child. A goodbye no family should ever have to say.
Hummingbird House is here for families who need us, for as long as they need us. But we need your help. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to help families like Ivy’s.
Two years ago we met beautiful brave Ivy and her family when they came to stay at Hummingbird House after Ivy had died. Please take a moment to watch Ivy’s story in the video above.
In early pregnancy, Ivy was diagnosed with a severe chromosomal abnormality: Trisomy 18 (Edward Syndrome). Ivy lived for a little over 24 hours after birth, and spent those 24 precious hours surrounded by her family. Ivy died in her mother’s arms, and was then received into care at Hummingbird House, along with her mum, dad, big brothers, and big sisters.
Ivy’s big sister Lily describes Ivy as “the most loveable and beautiful girl I have ever seen. And cute”. Her sister Beth adds “She is our Ivy, the most precious sister I could ever have”.
For Ivy’s mum and dad, Heidi and Per, staying at Hummingbird House was an opportunity to “create memories we would never have again, such as giving Ivy her first bath, taking pictures out in the garden with the fountain, and making footprint art with the whole family. This later became a beautiful piece of artwork that we will forever cherish”.
Heidi reflects that these experiences would not have been possible in hospital, but that being at Hummingbird House was “perfect for what we were going through”.
For big sister Lily, time at Hummingbird House meant “we were able to spend all our love and time together before she left”. It was also important to Lily to “say goodbye to Ivy in a lovely place without lots of people and noise.” For Ivy’s big brother Flynn, coming to Hummingbird House meant “it felt like her loss meant something and that it was important”.
Ivy’s family spent nine days in the warm embrace of Hummingbird House. For them, it was a place to “hide away and just concentrate on our family without having to worry about all the domestics of running a household. Hummingbird House took great care of us, and gave us the gift of time to make lasting memories and to say our final goodbyes to Ivy”.
With your support, Hummingbird House will continue to care for families like Ivy’s. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today, and help Hummingbird House make every moment count.
Our sincere thanks to Heidi, Per, Flynn, Beth, Lily, and Samuel – Ivy’s family – for sharing their story.
