There is a critical lack of suitable housing for society’s most vulnerable citizens, those with an intellectual disability, throughout the Mornington Peninsula area.
Frankston Peninsula Carers Inc. is a charitable organisation, incorporated in 2007, with a committee of volunteers annually elected by 111 members who are mostly elderly parent/carers, friends and supporters, who have come together to find solutions for this crisis.
Frankston Peninsula Carers Inc. plans to build a house for six people with intellectual disability, with 24/7 live-in care in McCrae, Victoria.
The total cost will be $ 1.6m. We need to raise $125,000 more to proceed with the project.
This heartbreaking letter was written by one of our mothers just recently and explains why we need to pursue our goal of building more supported accommodation.
“This is what I wrote the night before I relinquished Jack...” ……..Jack turns 21 this year...I made a 'baby'...I made a 'child'...but I couldn't make a 'man'...I didn't get the ingredients right. Tomorrow I push him 'out of the nest'...but he can't fly...I know he can't fly...so who is going to catch him? Who else will endure slaps and kicks while trying to change a nappy from a "Terrible Two" in a 5ft 9" body? Who else will stand firm and cop hits and scratches while insisting he has a bath every day. Who else will persevere through the tantrums to cut his hair...shave his face...brush his teeth...because he can do none of this himself- I couldn't teach him to. I failed the most important task as a parent..."Give your child independence". Who will explain to him why I have to 'abandon' him…'relinquish him, so that he can get used to surviving the day without a kiss and a cuddle from mum! ………………… To my 30-year-old self, I would say... "Thank the doctors for saving your baby- then ask where they will be in 21 years... when he is still in pieces...and now so am I".
Please donate to the Building of McCrae House.
