Why we are supporting FARA

Our Story

FAN is a network for Queenslanders impacted by FA - FAers, family, friends and carers. We're raising much needed funds for FARA by participating in rideATAXIA 2018. The work of FARA is really important to all of us and we want to do what we can to support them. You can help, too! Please donate and share this page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! Thank you for your generosity and support!

About rideATAXIA 2018

The Friedreich Ataxia Research Association is hosting its inaugural rideATAXIA Australia on the picturesque Mornington Peninsula on Sunday, 28 October 2018.

rideATAXIA welcomes people of all abilities to ride and raise funds for Friedreich Ataxia (FA) research. The ride aims to bring together families living with FA and other muscle diseases together with researchers, pharmaceutical representatives and local cyclists with a focus on friendship and camaraderie.

rideATAXIA Australia will offer fully supported 2km, 10km and 30km routes with views of the beaches and wineries of the Mornington Peninsula with gourmet food provided at the end of the ride in Red Hill.

Whether you are a beginner, disabled athlete, or a seasoned cyclist, everyone is welcome to join us for scenic cycling, great food and family fun.

About FARA

Imagine being a kid or a teenager and being told you have a degenerative muscle disease which will lead to a loss of muscle co-ordination, fatigue, vision impairment, hearing loss, slurred speech and then a serious heart condition - this is Friedreich Ataxia. 1 in every 30,000 affected. 1 in 90 are carriers.

The Friedreich Ataxia Research Association (fara) is a not for profit organisation that supports research into treatments and a cure for Friedreich Ataxia. fara does not receive State or Commonwealth Government support and relies largely on the family and friends of Friedreich Ataxia patients and generous businesses within Australia and New Zealand to fund its research programs.

Money raised will help establish our first clinical gene therapy trials in Australia, which will help find new treatments and a cure for Friedreich Ataxia.
