Why I am supporting FARA

My Story

On Saturday the 20th May, I will be kicking for a cause. One Kick = $5.00 donation. For every $5.00 raised, I will kick a Thai Pad (Muay Thai style). Thank you for support -- it means a lot to me, my mate Mason McAllister and his little fighter, Tristan. I am taking part in Lend Us Some Muscle 2017 to raise much needed funds for FARA. Their work is really important in spreading awareness and finding a cure for Friedreich's Ataxia. FA is a debilitating, life shortening degenerative neuro-muscular disorder, which affects about 1 in 30,000 people in Australia and New Zealand. It is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 5 and 18 years and robs children and young adults of their mobility. FA leads to loss of muscle co-ordination, fatigue, vision impairment, hearing loss and slurred speech, scolosis (curvature of the spine), diabetes and serious heart conditions. But there is only so much I can do on my own. You can help too, by donating to my page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! You can also support me by encouraging others to get involved, too. Please email the link to my page to your friends and family, or share it on social media. Thank you for your generosity. Together we can make a difference.

About Lend Us Some Muscle 2017

IT’S A CHALLENGE!

As we know, people living with FA are physically challenged every day. So to support them, we are challenging ourselves to share their story and raise money for ground breaking research to help find a cure.

SO WHAT CAN I DO?

It’s simple. Put your muscles to the test. Challenge yourself, your friends, your family or your classmates to a show of strength. Sure, you could do a big bike ride or run a marathon, or just do something that you normally find a little hard, but we reckon it’ll be more fun if you challenge yourself to do something a little different with those muscles of yours...

SOME IDEAS

Put on an arm-wrestle comp at work

Or chin ups on the monkey bars at the park

Maybe get your whole school to do a sponsored plank

Or a group bench press at your local gym.

You could even organise a tug-of-war on the beach.

Money raised will help establish our first clinical gene therapy trials in Australia, which will help find new treatments and a cure for Friedreich Ataxia.

About my cause: FARA

Imagine being a kid or a teenager and being told you have a degenerative muscle disease which will lead to a loss of muscle co-ordination, fatigue, vision impairment, hearing loss, slurred speech and then a serious heart condition - this is Friedreich Ataxia. 1 in every 30,000 affected. 1 in 90 are carriers.

The Friedreich Ataxia Research Association (fara) is a not for profit organisation that supports research into treatments and a cure for Friedreich Ataxia. fara does not receive State or Commonwealth Government support and relies largely on the family and friends of Friedreich Ataxia patients and generous businesses within Australia and New Zealand to fund its research programs.

Money raised will help establish our first clinical gene therapy trials in Australia, which will help find new treatments and a cure for Friedreich Ataxia.
