Hi There, my name is Genie and I am NOT a runner. In fact, I was given more participation awards for failing at running than any other student in my primary school. But this year I've decided to partake in Blackmore's Half Marathon to show that mental health is just as important as physical health. I've decided to help end stigma around talking about mental illness and I've decided to run to make change. In 2015, suicide rates were the highest they'd been in 10 years, with the overall rate being 12.6 per 100, 000 Australians. In 2015 there were more than 8 deaths a DAY caused by suicide in Australia. Talking about our feelings is already hard but when someone is really struggling, just admitting you're not okay is one of the hardest things to do. We need to open conversations so that individuals who are struggling feel comfortable talking. You never know the battles that others are facing, so it's important to ask yourself if you're okay and ask others, to end stigma and prevent suicide. I am running for those struggling. I am running for those who have taken their own lives because they didn't get the chance to talk. I am running for those who face stigma everyday. I am running for those who are afraid to talk.
