Ok, ok, so I have hit a mid-life crisis. It was always going to happen, right? But instead of fast cars or flashy holidays, my calling is the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2018. Why would a beaten up 53 year old sign on for his first ever marathon rather than relax and enjoy some fine shiraz? Two reasons. Firstly, to regain some semblance of the fitness of my former days. Yes, there was a time when I was a sprinter (not a long distance runner). I ran the 100 meters only because there wasn't a shorter race. So why not book end it with a ridiculous 42 km run. Secondly, (and the real reason) is that I am running for R U OK ? This is a bloody good charity that does amazing work and they need our help. I saw Gavin Larkin's story on Australian Story a few years ago and it really struck a cord. Gavin's father sadly took his own life in 1995. He was depressed and lonely. He was not alone. People were around him. But he was lonely. We all have the potential to do bad things when we feel completely isolated and lonely. Sadly, Gavin himself fell to deadly cancer in 2011 leaving a beautiful family and great group of friends to carry on the R U OK? movement. And just to prove how indiscriminate cancer is, it has also taken Gav's and Maryanne's son Gus as well. Well, from one Gus to another, it's time for me to do something to help. The least this fat 53 year old can do to help out is run a marathon. Anyway, this is where you come in. If I have to run this bloody thing then the least you can do is cough up a few bucks to 'throw into the can' for the laugh. It will be seriously worth the laugh to watch me waddle around the course. In all seriousness, I would be so grateful if you could give any amount to the cause. R U OK will be stoked with your donation and the impact they will have on others with your donation will be life changing. Any amount you can give will be the difference that makes the difference! You could even be a mega legend by encouraging others to get involved, too. Please email the link to my page to your friends and family, or share it on social media. Thank you for your generosity and support -- it means a lot to me. Together we can help R U OK? create the world we want to see. Now for some serious training !! Ouch, is that a blister forming?
