Hey there! I'm taking part in the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 10K in September and supporting youth mental health services by raising much needed funds for ReachOut, and helping reduce the stigma of mental illness. My goal is to complete the 10K in 1hr:15m or less.
ReachOut is the leading online mental health service that aims to support people between the age of 14 and 25. Young people face unique challenges that make services such as ReachOut so important. 1 in 4 young people are suffering from a mental health illness but of these, for every 7 suffering, only 2 will seek help. In 2016, suicide was the leading cause of death of young people and accounted for 35.4% of deaths of people aged 15 - 24. Ensuring young people have access to mental health services and decreasing the stigma of mental health issues is so important in improving these statistics.
Most people who know me probably wouldn't know about my own struggle with mental illness.
I was diagnosed with depression and mild generalised anxiety disorder in 2015. For over a year I forced myself out of bed only for work out of necessity to pay for rent and living expenses. Most people don't even think about taking a shower - they just do it, but some days I couldn't even drag myself out of bed to do so. I stopped going to uni. I ended friendships. I couldn't sleep properly. For over a year I put on my best happy face and spoke to nobody, not even close friends about what was really going on. It wasn't until some time into 2016 that I finally opened up to two friends, and by the end of 2016 that I felt I finally had control of my life and mental illness. It isn't something that goes away, but it's something I can try to manage.
