My Story

The Centenary Institute is an independent organisation affiliated with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and The University of Sydney that supports scientists conducting medical research to improve diagnostics, treatments, and cures. What does that actually mean though? Well, if you or someone you love has ever had to endure cancer, suffered from a heart attack, been affected by an auto-immune disease like Coeliac, or lives with diabetes then what Centenary does should be of interest to you as they are a world leading research generator on the topics of: · Cancer · Cardiovascular and; · Inflammation The work can be painstaking – years can be spent studying one cell! But the scientist’s tireless efforts continue to yield meaningful insights. Just recently they uncovered a new drug that could stop body fat building up, which has the potential to do wonders in the fight against obesity. Check out the segment Channel 7 did on this discovery if you’re interested: An accumulation of small scientific breakthroughs can have a BIG impact on what we understand about health. Just like a number of small monetary contributions can make a BIG difference to an organisation that relies solely on government grants and donations. It’s no secret that I enjoy running, and I do feel a bit cheeky asking for donations of support for something I love to do. But, I figure if I’m going to run 42kms then why not use it as an opportunity to raise awareness and highlight the MARATHON efforts of the Centenary Institute. Also, to make it worth your while, if I reach my donation target I'll share a close-up photo of my face taken less than 1 min post finishing the run. This will be good for future blackmail! I understand that we all have charities and organisations that speak to us for personal reasons. But few of us are not affected by the benefits of medical research. Any donation will be immensely appreciated and go straight to the scientists that make these discoveries possible. Please reach out if you have any questions. Katie

About my cause: Centenary Institute

A world-leading independent medical research institute, Centenary has more than 33 years of experience and knowledge guiding our life saving research. This is focused on three key areas: cancer, inflammation and cardiovascular disease.

The Centenary Institute is dedicated to supporting the medical research sector as a whole. We firmly believe that our service to humanity is to better the health of our community by understanding some of the most chronic diseases affecting today’s society, in order to find cures.

Many of our senior scientists are specialist clinicians at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Their direct experience with patients and what they see in the clinics guides their research pathway in the laboratory, ensuring a virtuous cycle of bench-to-bedside research and accelerates our ability to translate cutting-edge discoveries into practice – ultimately to improving patient outcomes with more effective therapies.

Together we are the solution…together we can save lives.

We can all make a difference to our quality of life and our longevity by supporting medical research.

We are inspired by the work of over 200 scientists at the Centenary Institute and invite you to support them by raising money via the Blackmores Running Festival. Please help us help them by joining Team Centenary and taking part in this year’s Blackmore’s Runnng Festival or by giving whatever you can using the 'Give Now' button. The more people that know about the Centenary Institute, the greater our impact, so please also spread the word by sharing this page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!
