My Story

Our cousin Amity is not here with us anymore because of cancer. She should be here with us but she’s not so We are taking part in Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2018 to raise much needed funds for Children’s Cancer Institute so no other family has to go through what Amity’s Mum and Dad and her brothers and sister, her aunts and uncles and all her family are going through now. We want to do whatever we can to help and you can help too, by donating to our page. Any amount you can give makes a difference. Together we can help Children’s Cancer Institute create the world we want to see. One where no one else has to hear that their precious son or daughter has cancer. Please share so we can raise lots of money and really make a difference.

About my team: Team Amity

Amity Rogers died of a tumour in her brainstem in January of this year. To meet our Amity was to meet a funny, joyous, clever, loving, spirited girl who loved life and gave generously of herself. We miss her desperately. We miss her laugh and her smile, her gentle words of encouragement and her crafty creations which always became gifts to someone. We miss her praise, her cheeky little observations and her warm hugs. She was a girl who had a lot to offer the world. Amity’s tumour was donated to the Children’s Cancer Institute. From the time she was three, Amity said she wanted to be a scientist, so we felt it was right to give her tumour to the researchers and doctors who will use it to find a cure for brain cancer. We hope that one day, a family will not need to lose their Amity to brain cancer. Brain cancer is now the leading cause of non-accidental deaths in children. Interventions are urgently needed. To help raise money for the Children’s Cancer Institute, we have formed Team Amity for the Sydney Running Festival. We are calling you to join us on this mission. Sign up to join Team Amity. You can run any of the distances available on the day (Marathon, half-marathon, 10k and 3.5k). Amity’s older brother will be running in the 10k version. Her four-year old brother will be running the 3.5k. (We suspect he’ll try and hitch a lift on the back of his little sister’s pram.) If you can’t join us on the day, please consider supporting us, either by donating or sharing this page. All money raised will go to vital brain cancer research. We have to put an end to stories like Amity’s. We can and we will.

About my cause: Children’s Cancer Institute

Our purpose
Every year 950 Australian children and adolescents will be diagnosed with cancer. Every week nearly three Australian children and adolescents will die of cancer.

Our organisation exists solely to put an end to childhood cancer.

We don’t just hope to do it.

We will do it.

And we are making great strides.

Sixty years ago, cancer was nearly always a death sentence for a child. Now eight out of 10 children survive. What made that huge difference? Medical research.

As the only independent medical research institute in Australia wholly dedicated to childhood cancer, our role is vital. Because, despite our progress, cancer still kills more children than any other disease.

Our task won’t be easy – childhood cancer is hugely complex – but we’re confident that with the brightest brains, the best facilities and the greatest determination, we will get the job done.

It’s not if. It’s when.
