We lost our Amity to a tumour in her brainstem in January of this year. One of her qualities was her physical skill and derring-do. This was exploited to maximum advantage by her big brother, Atticus, who would always take her on adventures in parks, up trees and into neighbouring backyards. Atticus misses his little sister desperately. She was a funny, joyous, clever, loving and spirited companion. Her absence has left a profound gap in his life. To help raise money for the Children’s Cancer Institute, Atticus, aged 10, and I are running in the 10 kilometre race at the Sydney Running Festival. It is the biggest run of his life and he has started training in his usual determined way. Atticus will be running in memory of Amity. We hope it will help him channel some of that energy that couldn’t be put to use in saving Amity. To watch the slow-motion decline and death of his sister was incredibly difficult for him. He felt helpless. This is one way he can do something: To help a future child to avoid the same terrible demise. Please support Atticus in his big run.
