My Story

I am taking part in Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2018 to raise much needed funds for World Bicycle Relief. Their work is really important, and I want to do what I can to help. But there is only so much I can do on my own. You can help too, by donating to my page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! You can also support me by encouraging others to get involved, too. Please email the link to my page to your friends and family, or share it on social media. Thank you for your generosity and support -- it means a lot to me. Together we can help World Bicycle Relief create the world we want to see.

About my team: World Bicycle Relief Team Page

[The Power of Bicycles] is raising much needed funds for World Bicycle Relief by participating in Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2018. World Bicycle Relief mobilises people in rural areas in developing countries where the main mode of transport is walking. Children have to walk up to 12km to school to get an education. Often it is a difficult and even dangerous journey. Healthcare volunteers walk up to 18km to make 3 patient visits. Yes, villages rely on healthcare workers to visit them rather than making a quick trip to the medical centre. Farmers without a bicycle carry milk to the Dairy Co-op or produce to the markets with wheelbarrows. Their journeys are also often over 12km. The work of World Bicycle Relief is really important - giving people the chance of an education helps ending the cycle of poverty and disease. Mobilising people by simply giving them a bicycle gives them the opportunity to attend school, increases healthcare and economic development. You can help, too! Please donate and share this page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! Thank you for your generosity and support!

About my cause: World Bicycle Relief

World Bicycle Relief (WBR) was founded in 2005 by F.K. Day and Leah Missbach Day in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. As a founder of SRAM and leader in product development, F.K.'s role offered a unique opportunity to problem-solve with other cycling industry leaders. As a documentary photographer, Leah’s gift for sharing stories helped bring the devastation of those affected by the tsunami to light. Together, with a solid backing from SRAM Corporation and an outpouring of support from industry leaders, FK and Leah helped to launch WBR and provide bicycles to those in need. Partnering with aid organizations in Sri Lanka, WBR distributed more than 24,000 bicycles to displaced survivors, providing access to education, healthcare and livelihoods while reconnecting entire communities.

Following the positive impact that bicycles provided as relief in Sri Lanka, we were invited to partner with a large-scale health program in Zambia. The USAID-funded program, RAPIDS, trained and equipped community healthcare workers to help combat the AIDS epidemic. In 2006, we provided more than 23,000 bicycles through this program to support volunteers who would walk long distances to provide home-based care.

WBR has since built programs to provide specially designed, locally assembled bicycles for students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs across Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. While the bicycles themselves help individuals conquer distance and increase their carrying capacity, WBR has also created new economic opportunities by training field mechanics and employing bike assemblers to support our local programs.
