My Story

I'm running the half marathon in the upcoming Blackmores Sydney Running Festival, and I've chosen to run in support of the Children's Hospital at Westmead. The Children's Hospital has a lot of sentimentality for me, as when I was 11 I broke my hip after running in a school athletics carnival. Initially doctors said the best course of action was to pin it and I would be walking again soon - but I would need a hip replacement, have early arthritis and be in frequent pain in later life. Instead, after going to the Children's Hospital I was put on an experimental treatment program which had much better outcomes over the rest of my life at the cost of considerable short-term discomfort. I went through with it, survived my year in a wheelchair and over 6 months on crutches, and now I relish the opportunities I have and the freedom I feel whenever I get to run or walk around. I've just completed my first city2surf and am now on the lookout for more events to push my boundaries. I (and the Children's Hospital) appreciate any donation you can give and I hope I can make you all proud of my efforts!

About my cause: The Children’s Hospital at Westmead

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is the largest paediatric centre in NSW specialising in treating seriously ill children.
As part of the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, the hospital provides specialist care for children from around Australia and across the Pacific Rim as well as community education, advocacy for improved child health and ground-breaking research into childhood illnesses, all in a positive, caring and healing environment.

Founded in 1880, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is a public hospital, with 4,467 staff across 150 departments looking after more than 80,000 sick children and their families each year. This includes around 32,000 inpatient admissions, 57,000 emergency department presentations and more than 886,000 outpatient visits.

The hospital is home to the NSW Paediatric Burns Unit, the Paediatric Liver Transplant Unit, the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance, the NSW Newborn Screening Service and National Poisons Information Centre, as well as the first Paediatric Tumour Bank in the southern hemisphere.

Research is one of the key ways in which the hospital provides the highest standard of care to sick children and their families. The Kids Research Institute leads research into childhood diseases, resulting in significant advances in the treatment of cancer, obesity, kidney, heart and respiratory illnesses, diabetes and muscular dystrophy.

Funded by the NSW Government, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead provides significant extra services thanks to the generosity of individual and corporate donors.
