My Story

I am taking part in Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2017 to raise much needed funds for Mark Hughes Foundation. Their work is really important, and I want to do what I can to help. After losing my beautiful, strong & brave husband Benny, who was only 43 years old, I'm more determined to raise funds for MHF who are doing an amazing job for brain cancer research & support. 2015 was our best & worst year, we married Jan 2015 & were so incredibly happy & then with no warning signals on the 12/10/2015 I got a phone call from Benny saying don't panic but I've called an ambulance. When I got home it was like Benny was hyperventilating & he was having focal seizures in his left hand. At the hospital Benny had 2 convulsive grand mal seizures which scared the living daylights out of us both. When he had the 2nd it meant a CT scan needed to be done to find out the cause, showing a 2-3cm mass on the right side of his brain. Friday of the same week was his 1st operation. Benny recovered well from that operation & we were running within a week, we were so hopeful, but the results were the worst possible, stage 4 Glioblastoma (GBM). We held onto hope, but still knew the possibility Benny might not survive 2years The Brain care coordinator Jane & then Sandy funded by the Mark Hughes Foundation were 2 of our biggest supporters. Our world was changed & we needed that support. Benny survived only 14months from diagnosis. He had his 2nd operation when the tumour returned in Feb 2016, & the final operation in October 2016 when it spread to the left side of his brain. Since diagnosis Ben suffered from left side weakness, required rehabilitation & the bigger seizures were the sign of reoccurrence of the cancer. The Brain care coordinators were in appointments with us, there for us to reach out to in between appointments, organised rehabilitation & put us in touch with palliative care to see what could make things safer in the home & help Benny keep some independence, they also helped with treatment schedules & they were there for us till the end when we were at the Calvary Mater hospice for Bennys final 2 months. I really don't want anyone else going through this, it's such a cruel disease & we need more funding for research & support. You can help too, by donating to my page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! You can also support me by encouraging others to get involved, too. Please email the link to my page to your friends and family, or share it on social media. Thank you for your generosity and support -- it means a lot to me. Together we can help Mark Hughes Foundation create the world we want to see.

About my team: The Brain Train 2017

The Brain Train 2017 is raising much needed funds for Mark Hughes Foundation by participating in Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2017. The work of Mark Hughes Foundation is really important and we want to do what we can to support them. You can help, too! Please donate and share this page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! We started the Brain Train in 2015 after my husband Ben was diagnosed with Brain Cancer in October 2015, more specifically grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme, or GBM. Benny fought bravely but 14 months after diagnosis he passed away January 2017. Benny & myself received so much support from the brain care coordinators funded by the Mark Hughes Foundation and we wanted to help raise money so more research can be done to ultimately find cure for brain cancer. I don't want anyone going through what Ben had to and I don't want others losing their loved ones, especially so young. Thank you for your generosity and support!
