My Story

I'll be running the Marathon at the Blackmores Sydney Marathon Festival this year. It will be my 5th time running this race (2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017). But the first time running it since a good mate Ben Walton sadly passed away after his fight with brain cancer. In 2015 a group called the 'Brain Train' was formed with the mission to raise some serious funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation but also to get around Benny and help him complete the Sydney Marathon which he did! I was lucky to be out on course running also and made sure to cheer hard for Benny and the Brain Train whenever I saw them. Unfortunately Benny's condition deteriorated after this, but the Brain Train is set to ride again in 2017, once again raising money for the Mark Hughes Foundation, and running in honour of Benny. Which is what I'll be doing and I'd love your support and any donations you can offer as we #RunForBenny!

About my team: The Brain Train 2017

The Brain Train 2017 is raising much needed funds for Mark Hughes Foundation by participating in Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2017. The work of Mark Hughes Foundation is really important and we want to do what we can to support them. You can help, too! Please donate and share this page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! We started the Brain Train in 2015 after my husband Ben was diagnosed with Brain Cancer in October 2015, more specifically grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme, or GBM. Benny fought bravely but 14 months after diagnosis he passed away January 2017. Benny & myself received so much support from the brain care coordinators funded by the Mark Hughes Foundation and we wanted to help raise money so more research can be done to ultimately find cure for brain cancer. I don't want anyone going through what Ben had to and I don't want others losing their loved ones, especially so young. Thank you for your generosity and support!

About my cause: Mark Hughes Foundation

The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) is a not for profit organisation formed in Newcastle by Mark and Kirralee Hughes following Marks diagnosis with Brain Cancer in 2013.

Mark is a well known and highly respected former Newcastle Knights Rugby League player, business and community identity who is undergoing treatment to fight brain cancer.

The Mark Hughes Foundation has been formed to raise much needed funds to promote research, heighten awareness and support brain cancer patients and their families within the community.
