My Story

Thanks for getting here I've signed up to the Sydney Marathon on September 17th, for me It’s not a run for charity, more of a selfish preoccupation, and a simple form of exercise that fits with work and family dynamics Blackmores encourage raising money for charities when you sign up so I’ve gone with Black Dog Institute because I think we have a way to go with it in Australia. My own goals in order: 1. Get to race day uninjured (some high mileage weeks are ahead) 2. To finish 3. To finish strong (unlike last year at the GC where I crossed the line sideways like a broken pelican) 4.. To get a PB - this means under 3:04 (that was a flat course...) 5. Get under Cookies time (you know it Erin! - this means < fiend) 6. To go sub 3 hours (I figure if the Kenyans are working on Sub 2, surely a punter might crack 3....or not ? ) 1 & 2 = possible / probable 3 = depends on the day 4 = unlikely 5 and 6 = highly unlikely (but a wise man once said “you gotta have a plan”) If you’re interested, please jump into the link below - its tax deductible of course I have started with a $50 ice breaker, If it hits the prescribed goal of $600, will also donate the $140 entry fee Thanks and again no pressure, we'd go broke if we funded them all & I certainly don't assume people have spare cash to throw in every random direction Cheers Rich Mason Footnote: I hope Black dog is a good charity in terms of money through to the intended purpose, always hard to know ... Standard spiel now: I am taking part in Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2017 to raise much needed funds for Black Dog Institute. Their work is really important, and I want to do what I can to help. But there is only so much I can do on my own. You can help too, by donating to my page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! You can also support me by encouraging others to get involved, too. Please email the link to my page to your friends and family, or share it on social media. Thank you for your generosity and support -- it means a lot to me. Together we can help Black Dog Institute create the world we want to see.

About my cause: Black Dog Institute

Our vision

A mentally healthier world.

Our mission

Enabling mentally healthier lives through innovations in science, medicine, education, public policy and knowledge translation.

What we do

The Black Dog Institute was founded in 2002 and is internationally recognised as a pioneer in the identification, prevention and treatment of mental illness, and the promotion of wellbeing.

We aim to improve the lives of people affected by mental illness through the rapid translation of high quality research into improved clinical treatments, increased accessibility to mental health services and delivery of long-term public health solutions.

Our unique approach incorporates clinical services with our cutting-edge research, our health professional training and community education programs. We combine expertise in clinical management with innovative research to develop new, and more effective strategies for people living with mental illness. We also place emphasis on teaching people to recognise the symptoms of poor mental health in themselves and others, as well as providing them with the right psychological tools to hold the black dog at bay.

We work directly in all parts of the community as well as guiding the development of new and improved policy. We place focus on those with specific mental health needs like young people, Indigenous communities, men, and high-risk workforces.

Our primary areas of mental health research and treatment include: depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, workplace mental health, adolescents and young people, suicide prevention, e-mental health, and positive psychology and wellbeing.
