My Story

I am taking part in Blackmores Sydney Running Festival 2017 to raise much needed funds for Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF). Their work is really important, and I want to do what I can to help. But there is only so much I can do on my own. You can help too, by donating to my page. Any amount you can give makes a difference! Furthermore your donation will be matched by my employer :) After seeing my god-daughter, Jessica Whelan, suffer with Neuroblastoma for over 12 months until she found peace last year, I wanted to do something to raise money to help fund research for children’s cancer. It was suggested by a colleague at work to run a marathon, I entertained the idea for about 5 minutes before dismissing it and filing it neatly in the 'too hard' basket, never to be found again. It took a week to come to the conclusion that, if even I was to run a dreaded marathon, the pain I would endure during this 42.2km (26 mile) run would only be a shadow on what Jessica felt on a daily basis while trying to beat this awful disease. The story continues and just as I started training just a few times a week I had a devastating phone call from the back home in the UK that my Grandad had passed away very suddenly, lung cancer, playing a contributing factor. I was heartbroken, as were my family and this is why I’m now running for cancer research. So, here I am today, already training 3-4 times a week for the Blackmores Sydney Marathon in September 2017. The training will be hard and the run itself even harder, but I’m prepared to give up the time and put in the effort to help raise much needed funding in memory of Jessica Mae Whelan & Graham Crabtree.

About my cause: Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF)

Australian Cancer Research Foundation is a cancer charity that focuses exclusively on giving Australia’s best scientists the technology they need to end cancer.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we are funding better ways of detecting, preventing and treating all types of cancer.

ACRF support helps to improve researcher’s understanding of cancer and leads to life-saving breakthroughs. In the past, we have seed-funded important discoveries such as the development of the HPV cancer vaccine.

What makes ACRF unique?
The government and other cancer charities are stretched thin with priorities that demand both their attention and their dollars, which leaves behind a significant gap in funding. ACRF is filling the gap that no other organisation fills.

Each year, ACRF awards competitive grants between $1-10M for major core equipment and infrastructure which is difficult to obtain from other funding sources.

ACRF is passionate about innovation and impact. To ensure we support only the most promising projects, our grants are awarded based on the advice of a panel of leading scientists. Since 1984, ACRF has proudly funded 65 ground-breaking cancer research projects across Australia, totalling $129.2M.

When you support ACRF, you have the power to give the next patient who is diagnosed with cancer a better chance of survival. We are incredibly grateful to our supporters for making cancer research progress possible.
