You know me, or you know someone just like me…….a busy mum juggling a career, a family, a life. You think you have got your proverbial shit together but cancer has a way of slapping you with a reality check. In January 2016 I was diagnosed with stage 3 triple negative breast cancer. We found 2 tumours and within 2 weeks I was in hospital for a mastectomy. BAM. Biopsy back – grade 3…. but I was lucky, we caught it early. Six rounds of chemo followed by 5 weeks of daily radiotherapy finishing in October 2016. But whilst the treatment for the cancer was finished the battle was still going. See this is where it got hard for me. Getting to know a body that was now recovering from the toxic drugs associated with chemo, from the constant blast of radiation. A body that was shocked into early onset menopause, a body that was ballooning uncontrollably with weight gain, a body that was struggling under the simple tasks like walking and standing, a body battling the fatigue, a brain that was not as sharp or switched on as it once had been. It was easy sometimes not to bother, there were days when it was just all too hard – you see the battle is not just physical, it is mental. But I always knew there was someone just like me going through this just like me, someone worse off than me going through worse than me. Turning to the Breast Cancer Network Australia helped with my need to control my destiny. It provided the most powerful of tools – knowledge and understanding. So to repay and to support others, I have committed to trek Nepal – a bucket list item for me. There is no time like now to do the things you want to do, so I am doing this now. But I will need your help to support others just like me. I have a lofty target to achieve and I will work hard along the way to be ready for this challenge. So thank you for your support and your generosity…any amount will help Breast Cancer Network Australia as I challenge myself over the next 6 months to be ready to trek Nepal.
