Why I am supporting Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF)

My Story

UPDATE: I did it! Today my head was shaved and I am so thrilled to have surpassed my target fundraising figure of $5000! Words can't express how grateful I am to all those amazingly generous people who supported my quest to raise as much money as I could for cancer research. Hopefully the funds I raised will one day help you or someone you love to live a life free from cancer. Every bit makes a difference - no matter how small. Jack... you are in my heart always. xx My name is Kathy and I am shaving my hair on Saturday 23rd March to raise much needed funds for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF). In January 2019, I lost my beloved friend and cousin Jackie to a rare and aggressive cardiac tumor. As an otherwise healthy young mother to 2 beautiful girls, Jackie hardly typified a 'cancer sufferer' and her initial diagnosis shocked everyone when it was made less than a year ago. She was incredibly intelligent, witty, independent, resilient and strong and she fought the disease inside her until the very end. Jackie has gone far too soon and it has left not only me, but all who knew and loved her, devastated. I struggled to find some meaning out of my grief until I realised that the only way to stop others from experiencing the pain of losing a loved one from cancer, is through research. So many advancements have been made in the area of cancer research in recent years but there is still so much that has yet to be discovered. With 1 in 3 Australian males and 1 in 4 Australian women expected to be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 75, cancer is sadly something that will touch us all at some point - either in our own lives or through family and friends. Unfortunately Jackie is only one of a large number of loved ones I have personally lost to cancer. I firmly believe that we can reduce the statistics however and the only way for that to happen is through research. There is only so much I can do on my own though. You can help too, by donating to my page. All donations over $2 are tax deductable. Any amount you can give makes a difference! You can also support me by encouraging others to get involved, too. Please email the link to my page to your friends and family, or share it on social media. Thank you for your generosity and support -- it means a lot to me. Together we can help Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) create the world we want to see. (My hair, once shaved, will also be donated to Variety and will be used to make wigs for children who have lost their hair from cancer treatment)
